Indian IT services group Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and networking company Tejas Networks have been the beneficiaries of a new contract from state-controlled operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
TCS has won a new advance purchase order worth about INR29.03 billion (about US$337.5 million) for the planning, engineering, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and annual maintenance of BSNL’s 4G mobile network at 18,685 sites.
Some of this work will benefit Tejas, which says that that the value of supplies for radio access network (RAN) and other equipment to TCS from Tejas for this deployment is expected to be approximately INR15.3 billion (about US$178 million) before tax.
According to India’s Economic Times, a TCS-led consortium, which includes Indian research and development institution the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) along with Tejas and ITI Limited (described as public sector undertaking in the telecommunications technology segment), is deploying a commercial 4G network for BSNL under a INR190 billion (about (US$2.21 billion) deal. This also includes upgrading the network to 5G.
The Tata Group's IT services arm is the system integrator. Tejas is supplying 4G/5G network equipment. C-DoT is supplying its network core solutions.
Tejas has been part of BSNL’s plans for some time. Indeed, in August 2023 we reported that it had won a contract worth INR74.9 billion (approximately US$900 million) from BSNL to supply gear and to offer annual support and maintenance for the operator’s 4G/5G network.
The Economic Times says Tejas Networks is in discussions with BSNL for follow-up deals for 4G and 5G network expansion and upgrades; it expects to conclude these talks soon.
